I do appreciate you being 'round

    eh John ?

Help me if you can, I’m feeling down,
And I do appreciate you being around,
Help me get my feet back on the ground,
Won’t you please please help me?

When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I never needed anybody’s help in any way,
But now these days are gone
    I’m not so self assured,

    Ouch! You're breaking my heart
    Ouch! I'm falling apart
    Ouch! Ow-ow-ouch!

Ring my friend I said you'd call

    Ah. An ulcer.

So THAT'S why I've felt like crap for the last week or two.

    Bloody stress. Dammit.

    Art for arts sake

Found this while trawling the interweb

"To celebrate a brilliant generation of British comedy talent, we asked the best names in the business - from Ricky Gervais to Russell Brand - to recreate a few famous images. Why? We just thought it would be funny. But you may never look at Johnny Vegas the same again ..."

Oh dear oh dear oh dear

Talking about The downside of being a strong, intelligent woman. . .

sometimes I think I know how you feel

... ah sure don't worry about Peter he'll be grand ... he's great sure he is

now and again all I need is someone to say "would it help if I did that for you ?"

    that would be nice :-)

though I don't think I'd be coping so well if I had the manager-from-hell and was trying to sell & buy houses while two wee people ran me ragged.

actually... I KNOW I wouldn't be coping so well.

Hey. Momma Miss America... would you like a hand with that ?

The downside of being a strong, intelligent woman. . .
. . .is that nobody ever considers the fact that, maybe, just once in a while, you might really need a little bit of help.

Everyone trips all over themselves to come to the aid of the rattle-brained, Helpless Female (you've all met her before, yes?), but if you're the type who has dared to exhibit the characteristic of being--gasp!--capable at any point in the past, they never give you a second thought ("Oh she's fine; she can handle anything. . .").

Of course, they're quick to tell you how "amazing" you are to be such a great juggler, handling everything in your life with such ease, and how they "could never manage it" themselves.

Fuck you, you condescending, insensitive bastards! On the rare occasions when I do ask for help with something, it's because I need it, and you should get off your fat, self-involved asses and pitch in--just like I do when you need something.

Find me in my field of grass

Took a trip out to our friend's place on Sunday.

Between the donkeys (they rescue animals and have acquired a few), the dogs, the ponies and the tractor we had 3 townies thinking that life in the countryside wasn't that bad after all !

Oh. My car stereo has been repaired (at last) and I'll be back to enjoying music in the car again. <phew>

    The Luck Of The Irish

I came on here mainly to write about progress on the Pugwash single mentioned below.

But first I want to say hello to a good friend HIYA PAUL ! We're thinking of ya mate.
Today's blog is brought to you by Maurice Michael Culnane who was a good dad and sounds like he was a top bloke.

On my way home from work yesterday I stopped off at The Bunker studio in Tallaght to see how the boys were getting on with the single. Now how freaky was this - the studio is located behind a house that I passed by every day on the way to school. I don't think I had walked those pavements for 20 or more years.
The lads had done the drums, bass, guide vocals and were finishing up the guitars when I arrived. While flicking through a recent copy of Viz I listened as Thomas did some mellotron type parts.

Today I stopped off again to see how things had progressed. The vocals were all done and the kids vocals (the ones we recorded on Sunday) were now in the mix. There's a great middle section that is not a million miles from the wonderful vocals in God Only Knows. I played a little bit of mellotron (that'll be me in the "I wrote my letter to Santa Claus.... "just before the chorus).

They're looking to add some Tubular Bells, Sleigh Bells and possibly are going to extend the end section... or maybe put a nice section at the start with the kids singing and loads of Christmassy bells.

Plans for the launch of the single are in full swing and ironically this could be the biggest break for the Pugs in Ireland to date. Watch out though... the album "Jollity" is coming out in the UK on October 30th.

Oh it's such a perfect day I'm glad I spent it with you

Today we recorded.... oh what a blast.

Thomas Walsh (he of Pugwash) has written a Christmas song which is to be released in a few weeks in aid of the Brainwave (Irish Epilepsy Association) charity.

Tinsel and Marzipan is the working title. Of course I'm biased... but ... frankly... I really truly believe this could be a classic. It's Christmas-sy but it's not annoying and doesn't make you want to punch the radio.

Thomas and I chatted about this a few weeks ago and I offered to record the kids singing on the track - you can't have a charity Christmas single without children !!! So during the past week I heard from Thomas and basically it's all gone very busy: national radio are behind this, there's a gig in October and he has some people such as Mundy, Hoppy (as in Therapy? , The Frames etc etc) and a certain Neil Hannon (oh, you know... The Divine Comedy.... Father Ted Theme, My Lovely Horse) all agreeing to appear on the single.

Alison, Heather and Ben sang... as did the boys from next door (Chris, Seán and Conor). To say that we had a lot of fun singing "Merry Christmas everyone, Merry Christmas everyone") for an hour or so is an understatement.  Making music should be joyous, it should be tiring, it should be a gas. It was all of that and more.  We have bits of video, a couple of photos and a lot of memories.

When the kids had finished singing (we recorded them several times to create a big "gang-of-kids" sound) Thomas and I retired to Apple Venus and did some vocoder stuff (if you're not familiar with the vocoder sound think of the very last line in ELO's Mr. Blue Sky).

I'll be dropping by another studio on tuesday or wednesday to take a peek at the remainder of the work they're doing on the song. We sang along, you see, with a sandpaper rough MP3 file that had guide drums , guide bass , guide guitar and guide vocal. It served as our guide. Eric Matthews (he of Portland, Oregon) had already added some horns and a harmony vocal and sent his contribution via the internet.

In the last section of the song the happy Irish kids voices merge with the American horns and the 40 years of power pop to create a sound that belongs on a 7" single to be spun at 45rpm.
